characterised by the scents of nature. Losing yourself gazing at the horizon stretching towards the east is truly uplifting.
The correct name of the Grotta is “posià“, a term which in the Greek language means fresh water, which flowed from this spring in ancient times.
Over the millennia, following karst erosion events, some rock fragments fell into the sea, allowing two natural pools protected from sea currents to form; the caves are connected through a 60-metre tunnel.
The spectacle you can witness when visiting this place includes the famous dives from the “grande” Grotta della Poesia, which is approximately 5 metres high….but that’s not all! The Grotta della Poesia also has historical and archaeological significance, as important inscriptions of Messapic, Greek and Latin origin are carved into its walls. All of this has been studied by archaeologists and historians, who discovered the original function of the cave: a place of worship of the God Taotor.
Evidence of the presence of Messapic civilisation is also the archaeological site 500 metres away, with the sixteenth-century watchtower, the ruins of the castle perched on the sea, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Roca from the seventeenth century.
